The Tao Te Ching, translated to mean the Book of the Way, is a treasure of philosophical wisdom written by Lao Tzu perhaps as early as the sixth century BCE. Its gentle truths continue to fascinate people throughout the world.
Almost nothing is known for certain about Lao Tzu but numerous myths and legends attest to the fact that he is regarded with reverence in Chinese culture. One legend recounts the story when he was 80 years of age, he decided to seek solitude. Riding on a water buffalo, he began the long journey towards what is now Tibet. At the Hankao Pass on the western border of China, a gatekeeper stopped Lao Tzu and requested that he record his wisdom and teachings before he left, lest they be lost forever. Lao Tzu agreed, turned away from the gates and returned a few days later with the “five thousand characters,” which would become known as the Tao Te Ching.
Does Lao Tzu’s philosophical truths ring true for us today? The answer is a resounding yes! Tao Now! Everyday Tao Te Ching explores the ancient wisdom of the Tao. Some of its truths explored include: mastering nature, not by conquering it, but by becoming it; giving up all concepts of judgments toward others and becoming more compassionate; describing simple life truths, which on the surface appear paradoxical, bring us closer to the unity of truth beyond the diversity; and living in synchronicity with flow of life while being completely authentic and sincere in how we treat others.
The app is divided into a wheel of core virtues of the Tao: Simplicity, Humility, Wisdom and Love with additional thoughts of Immortality, Spirituality, Materialism and Hypocrisy. Spin the wheel and random snippets of Tao verses (translated by John H. McDonald, 1996) will appear along with expanded meditation for thought and inspiration.
Tao Now! Everyday Tao Te Ching is produced by the CVC Arts Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit organization, (www.cvcartsfoundation.org) with all proceeds going toward art scholarships, awards and art outreach programs in the US, Canada, China and other countries.
