Tao Te Ching Book and Tao Now! App Project

Project Summary

The Tao Te Ching – A Photographic Journey, an initiative of CVC ARTS, is a quality book that bridges time and space by expressing the ancient wisdom of Chinese philosophy of the Tao Te Ching through the modern medium of photographic art.

As in Art, the interconnectedness of our human experience is also one of the central themes of the Tao. Whatever the challenges and frustrations of our individual lives, the Tao Te Ching, written by Lao Tzu in 500 BCE, invites us to recognize that beyond our perceptions of individuality and separation exists a deep and elemental unity that connects all humans one to another, to nature and to the entirety of the universe.

Our project will promote and support arts education globally by raising social awareness and encouraging a new spirit of understanding between Eastern and Western thought.

The Book

CVC ARTS is producing a high-quality art book entitled the Tao Te Ching – A Photographic Journey. The book, which is a synthesis of images at various location in China interspersed with expressive verses from the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu, will offer viewers an intimate portrayal not only of an ancient culture, but also of the contrasts that arise for a China in transition within the modern world.

The App

The Tao Now! App introduces Everyday Tao to the app user with ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu’s verses of the Tao Te Ching presented in 8 categories: Humility, Love, Wisdom, Immortality, Materialism, Simplicity, Hypocrisy and Spirituality.

Arts Outreach

The overarching goal of this project is to foster cross-cultural awareness, communication and understanding through Art. Because of a lack of comprehensive arts education in China, especially in rural or remote areas, many Chinese schools cannot afford even the most basic art supplies. In 2011 we have partnered with several schools in China to provide funds for art supplies to needy students including the Dandelion Middle School in Beijing, a boarding school serving children of migrant labourers and Guanyindang Primary School in Jingzhou City, which serves over 750 students. As we move forward, The Tao Te Ching – A Photographic Journey and the Tao Now! App will allow us to continue to support these two schools as well as expand our outreach education initiative to others within the Chinese borders.
